Grazing

Partneriaeth Pennal is trialling the use of remote-collar technology across grazing areas in the Dyfi Catchment. The GPS collars and virtual barriers enhance management options for animal welfare, safety, and nature conservation.

The system offers greater control of grazing in environmentally sensitive areas as virtual fencing can create exclusion and inclusion zones, enabling concentrated grazing for set periods within a fixed area like the salt marsh here on the Dyfi Estuary.

We will also trial whether the collars can be used to protect watercourses from contamination by stock, thus ensuring better habitat for wildlife. In terms of animal welfare, the system is considered better than electric fences and will also enable us to exclude livestock from hazards.
